ABOUT THE ALBUM
Growing up I had an obsession with space travel. We had this documentary series on DVD called When We Left Earth about NASA and all of the astronauts who were apart of it, and I watched that series probably at least 12 times. I was fascinated by the stories, adventures, missions, and wonder of it all. Space wasn’t the only thing that captivated my imagination. I created an entire baseball league in my head complete with team names, records, player names, stats, stadiums, etc. and I’d use a souvenir mini-bat and a tennis ball to play 9 inning games in my backyard. By myself.
I wanted to capture that sense of wonder and imagination I had when I was a kid when I was working on this album. Space Kid is a collection of lessons I learned growing up and people who helped me learn those lessons. Songs like <3 Yourself and Emotional Ocean are based on conversations I’ve had with friends, while songs like Mayberry and Never Been In Love take a more story-telling approach to expressing myself.
The title track is a bit of a different breed when compared to the other songs on the album, and that is purposeful. I wanted to write a song telling the kid who was playing full games of baseball in his mind that he was going to be okay. I wanted to tell him that he wasn’t lonely anymore.
